Gaza journalist shot by Israel moved to West Bank hospital

A Palestinian journalist from Gaza, who was shot in the head and critically injured by Israeli forces while covering protests on Friday, was transferred to a hospital in the central occupied West Bank city of Ramallah late Sunday night, after all Israeli hospitals allegedly refused him treatment.

Head of the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate, Nasser Abu Bakr, announced that Palestinian journalist Ahmad Abu Hussein had arrived to the Ramallah Governmental Hospital late Sunday to receive treatment.

Abu Bakr declared that “after strenuous efforts” on part of Palestinian officials, Israel allowed Abu Hussein’s transfer to hospitals of the West Bank for treatment.

However, Abu Bakr noted that Abu Hussein was only transferred to Ramallah after being denied treatment by “all Israeli hospitals”, that would have possibly been able to offer him more comprehensive care.

Abu Bakr added that dozens of journalists welcomed Abu Hussein in front of the Ramallah Hospital in Ramallah.

“The Israeli authorities committed two crimes against Abu Hussein, one when injuring him with an explosive bullet in the head and another when delaying his transfer from Gaza hospitals to Ramallah, as if the occupation insists on killing him,” Abu Bakr said.

Abu Hussein is not the first journalist who has been targeted by Israeli forces while covering the Great March of Return protests. On 6 April, Palestinian photographer Yaser Murtaja was shot in the abdomen while covering the protests near Gaza’s border with Israel. At the time he was wearing a blue flak jacket with the word “PRESS” clearly written on it. He died from his wounds in hospitals the following day.
