Qatar Red Crescent and UNICEF sign agreement to rehabilitate water facilities in Iraq

The Qatari Red Crescent and the UNICEF have signed an agreement to rehabilitate water and sanitation facilities in the Iraqi province of Nineveh. This follows the tenth regional conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Baghdad.

The agreement, signed by Qatar Red Crescent Secretary General Ali bin Hassan Al-Hammadi and UNICEF Deputy Representative in Iraq  Hamida Ramdani, aims at enhancing cooperation over humanitarian projects in Nineveh governorate. It will impact some 1,530,000 residents of Mosul and its surrounding  areas. The departments of health and water and the Directorate of Education in Nineveh will also coordinate to carry out humanitarian projects.

The two parties discussed the mechanism of implementing humanitarian projects in Iraq and joint cooperation for the next four years. During this time many projects which involving providing water and sanitation for displaced people in camps as well as the local community.

Al-Hammadi explained that the agreement comes in the context of supporting Iraq to meet the challenges of the next phase of reconstruction, praising the joint cooperation and continuous efforts of the Iraqi Red Crescent to facilitate the Qatar Red Crescent mission in Iraq. He said that it is an important step in the process of early recovery and reconstruction, and a continuation of the leading role the State of Qatar plays in the field of humanitarian work in the region.
