Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail yesterday dismissed a senior official in the Ministry of Awqaf on suspicion of corruption.

“Ismail has issued a decision to exempt the head of the Egyptian Endowment Authority, Ahmed Abdul Hafiz, from his post,” the religious ministry said.

Earlier this month the Minister of Awqaf, Mukhtar Jumaa, filed a request to the Administrative Prosecution and the Accountability and State Authority against Abdul Hafez to investigate the sale of some of the authority’s shares to the Egyptian Housing and Development Bank.

“The sale of some of the authority’s shares involved flagrant violations where the sale’s total losses amounted to nearly 100 million Egyptian pounds ($5.7 million),” a senior Egyptian official said.
