Tunisia yesterday announced the arrest of a man who is suspected of taking part in the assassination of aerospace engineer Mohammed Al-Zawari in December 2016.

The suspect was held in Croatia on 13 March, the spokesperson for Tunisia’s prosecution Sofiene Sliti said, adding that another has been identified.

“The two people who carried out the assassination were identified – both were of Bosnian nationality,” he added.

Mohamed Zaouari, 49, was killed in a hail of bullets at the wheel of his car outside his house in Tunisia’s second city Sfax in December 2016.

The government earlier confirmed that “foreign elements” had been involved in the killing of the Tunisian-Belgian citizen, which sparked outrage in Tunisia.

The Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported that before he was killed, Al-Zawari was working on developing remote-controlled submarines to be used by the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas to target Israeli oil and gas platforms in the Mediterranean Sea.
