Hezbollah: Election results great victory for resistance

May 8, 2018 at 10:32 am

Secretary-General of Lebanese Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, said yesterday that the parliamentary elections results were a “political and moral victory” for the resistance.

Responding to remarks made by Prime Minister Saad Hariri, who said Hezbollah was subjected to an “exclusion” attempt from Lebanese political life, Nasrallah said no party had attempted to exclude another.

“No political party in the elections intended to exclude another party. There is no possibility of excluding any party under the proportional representation law,” Nasrallah said, however he added that “it is possible that one party will get more or less of its proportion but there is no exclusion.”

Nasrallah said Hezbollah needed a strong parliamentary presence for two reasons; to provide political protection for the resistance and to have a parliamentary bloc capable of achieving the declared electoral programmes.

Holding elections is an achievement for the president, the government and all the Lebanese people, he added. This is the first time that people have been able to go to the polls in the country for nine years.

According to initial results, Hezbollah and allied Amal movement have made significant gains in Sunday’s elections.
