A Palestinian prisoner suffered a stroke on Tuesday while being held in the occupation’s Ramleh prison, Palestinian sources said.

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Club said on Wednesday that Aziz Awaisat, 53, was taken to Tel Hashomer hospital for treatment as a result of the stroke.

Awaisat is serving a 30-year term which began in 2014 following his arrest from the occupied East Jerusalem district of Jabal Al-Mukaber.

There has been a significant increase in the number of sick Palestinian prisoners being held in Israeli jails, the Prisoners and Detainees Authority said, with approximately 1,800 ill detainees being reported in March. This amounts to 27.7 per cent of all those held by occupation forces.

Of those, 700 are in need of urgent care, including those suffering from cancer and those with mental health conditions as a result of the torture endured in prison.
