Emirati nationals will no longer require a visa to enter Canada from next month, Canadian Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship said on Monday.

Ahmed Hussen made the announcement during a meeting held with the UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The new resolution will come in to effect from 5 June and will be valid for those staying no longer than six months.

According to the Canadian minister, the decision was made after a comprehensive and rigorous assessment of the UAE which showed that the Gulf state meets all Canadian criteria for visa waivers.

However, Emiratis will need to obtain an electronic travel authorisation (eTA) to fly to, or transit through, a Canadian airport.

The UAE canceled visa requirements for Canadian citizens in June 2013.
