The Gaza Strip saw 2,786 new births in May while 319 people died, the Palestinian Ministry of Interior and National Security revealed yesterday.

The number of female births exceeded male births in Gaza’s various governorates, with 1,652 girls born making up 59 per cent of the total births, compared to 1,134 male births.

Males made up 65 per cent of those who died in May, the civil registration authorities revealed.

More than 65 Palestinians were killed in one day in May as they protested against the opening of the US embassy in occupied Jerusalem. Israel used live ammunition and tear gas to disperse the unarmed protesters, killing many and wounding hundreds.
