Egypt postpones trial of 292 defendants in Sisi assassination plot case

July 12, 2018 at 2:35 pm

An Egyptian military court has adjourned the trial of 292 defendants accused of involvement in a plot to assassinate President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.

The trial has been adjourned to 18 July when the court will hear the defence’s statement.

Prosecutors accuse the defendants of assassinating three judges in the northeastern city of Arish and attacking a hotel where judges monitoring the 2015 parliamentary elections were staying, killing two judges, four police personnel and another citizen.

Al-Sisi was elected president in 2015 – when he ran virtually unopposed – after he led a military coup against the country’s first democratically elected civilian President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.
