Egypt mulls reducing civil servants’ working days

Egypt is studying a proposal to reduce the number of working days civil servants work but said it will not reduce their working hours, the Anadolu Agency reported.

The Information and Decision Support Centre (IDSC) said in a statement that the government’s Central Agency for Organisation and Management is studying the reduction of the number of working days for some of those employed in the state’s administrative body without changing the number of hours they work or reducing their wages.

The IDSC added that the decision currently under consideration aims to ease traffic congestion and reduce the public service’s energy consumption.

Last May, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi said that the country’s civil service body is exploding.

He added that the country “does not need more than one million [government] employees.” Egypt currently has more than five million civil servants.
