Al-Armouti: This is why Interpol will not hand over Mutee to Jordan

August 9, 2018 at 2:09 am

Interpol, the International Criminal Police Organization, will not bring in and hand over businessman Awni Mutee to Jordan, according to Saleh Al-Armouti, an MP.

Al-Armouti referred to a precedent set in a previous case involving businessman Ahmad Chalabi, who was not handed over because the request for his extradition was issued by a military court and Interpol does not recognise its legitimacy.

Al-Armouti also stressed that it is not permissible under the constitution for the Prime Minister to refer cases relating to the Economic Criminal Law to the State Security Court because the economic crimes are within the jurisdiction of the independent judiciary.

He added that “any legal or penal disputes are within the jurisdiction of the regime courts.”  He said that transferring the case to the State Security Court is “nonsense,” and that the general jurisdiction is the responsibility of the judiciary.

It is noted that Interpol has issued a search warrant against businessman Awni Mutee to arrest him and hand him over to Jordan.

According to the official memorandum, Mutee is wanted by the Kingdom for economic crimes amounting to 177 million Jordanian dinars until 2014.
