Canada: Libya’s elections must be based on its constitution

Libya and Canada have agreed on the importance of the provision of a solid constitutional basis for holding parliamentary and presidential elections and on holding both elections simultaneously, the Anadolu Agency reported.

This came in a meeting between Canadian Ambassador to Libya, Hilary Childs-Adams, and the Chairman of the Presidential Council of Libya, Fayez Al-Sarraj, according to a statement issued by the latter’s media office.

Childs-Adams affirmed her country’s support for the internationally-recognised Government of National Accord, which Al-Sarraj heads.

The Libyan premier praised Canada’s support for his government and its “democratic path”.

Al-Sarraj added that he looks forward to the resumption of the Canadian embassy’s operation in the capital, Tripoli.

The embassy’s office in Tripoli was temporarily suspended “due to the deteriorating security environment in Libya” and the embassy is carrying out its duties remotely from its office in Tunisia, according to its official website.

Sarraj said that the reopening of the embassy’s Tripoli office would have a positive effect on communication and coordination between the two countries, and on the enhancement of bilateral cooperation.

He also called for facilitating the process of obtaining a visa to Canada for Libyan citizens.

Libya is due to hold elections on 10 December.
