Former Iranian interior minister, Abdullah Ramadan Zadeh, called on Friday on his country not to oppose dividing Iraq ahead of the imposition of US sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

“I have previously said this, we should not oppose Iraq’s partition,” Zadeh said on Twitter.

Zadeh’s call came in response to Iraqi government spokesman, Saad Hudaithi, who said that his country would have to abandon the US dollar in trade with Iran as a result of US sanctions on Tehran.

Hudaithi pointed out that the sanctions imposed on Iran will affect remittance and transactions in US dollars.

He predicted that abandoning the US dollar would negatively affect trade relations between the two countries, and that it would be difficult to maintain the same commercial level under sanctions.

Last week, Mahmoud Sadeghi, a member of Iran’s Islamic Consultative Assembly,  called on Iraq to pay compensation for the damages caused by the first Gulf War.
