Egypt frees hundreds of prisoners in Eid al-Adha pardon

Egypt on Tuesday released 2,376 prison inmates in the third presidential pardon to be carried out this month, the Interior Ministry has said.

According to a ministry statement, the amnesty — timed to coincide with the first day of the Eid al-Adha holiday — includes 1,088 full (i.e., unconditional) pardons and 661 conditional releases.

The amnesty also applies to another 627 people jailed for having failed to meet their debt obligations.

On Aug. 3, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi issued a pardon for 66 prisoners. Three days later, another 1,118 inmates were freed in a second presidential pardon.
