The Cairo Criminal Court has sentenced the former speaker of Egypt’s Shura Council, Safwat El-Sherif, to three years in prison and an LE 99 million fine over charges of illicit gains. The court has acquitted his son, Ehab, in the retrial.

El-Sherif filed a request of reconciliation to the Illicit Gains Authority, saying he will return LE 35 million in order to drop the charges against him, however the authority referred his request to a technical committee to accurately estimate the value of the funds.

El-Sharif’s defence team has also submitted a statement stating that El- Sharif gave up four pieces of land in the Ismailiyya governorate worth LE 44 million as part of reconciliation with the Egyptian government.

Last year the Court of Cassation cancelled a decision to sentence El-Sherif and his son to five years’ imprisonment and an LE 209 million fine for exploiting influence and illicit gain and decided to retry them.
