Libya’s Brigadier General Khalifa Haftar has threatened to launch a war on Algeria following a recent incident where a number of Algerian soldiers crossed into Libya.

A video published yesterday by Al Jazeera showed Haftar, along with a group of his supporters, stressing that the current Libyan war could be instantly transferred to the Algerian border.

He accused the North African country of exploiting the instability in Libya.

Algerian authorities, Haftar noted, apologised for the “soldiers’ individual behaviour” and promised to reach an end to the crisis within a week.

According to Algeria 1, Haftar’s remarks came as a challenge to Algeria’s mediation efforts to end the protracted Libyan crisis.

Haftar has previously described Algeria and Arab countries as “enemies”, accusing them of trying to control the country’s wealth.
