Report: Bahrain revoked citizenship of 743

October 2, 2018 at 10:01 am

Bahrain has stripped 743 people of their citizenship since 2012, the Salam Organisation for Democracy and Human Rights said yesterday.

The organisation said in a statement posted on its website that as many as 237 Bahrainis were deprived of their citizenship in 2018, 156 in 2017, 90 in 2016, 208 in 2015, 21 in 2014 and 31 in 2012.

“November 7 2012 was the first day the Bahraini citizen was stripped of his nationality and emerged as the most troubling way to try to silence opposition in Bahrain,” the organisation said.

The rights group pointed out that the first incident took place when the Bahraini interior minister issued a decision to revoke the citizenship of 31 citizens; including religious scholars, parliamentarians, academics, rights activists, media personnel and members of the civil society.
