October 3, 2018 at 1:47 pm

Tunisian President Béji Caid Essebsi yesterday received Palestinian teen activist Ahed Tamimi who has recently been released from Israeli prison.

The president said in a statement that his meeting with Tamimi was a tribute from Tunisia to the Palestinian people’s struggles and sacrifices.

“This reception represents a renewed and firm recognition of the justice of the Palestinian cause and its place in the Tunisian people’s conscience,” he said.

For her part, Tamimi expressed gratitude for the Tunisian president’s invitation, pointing out that this is her first visit to an Arab country after she was released from Israeli prison on 29 July.

Tamimi’s visit comes as Tunisia commemorates the 33rd anniversary of the Israeli air strike on the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) headquarters in the Hammam El-Shat district, south of Tunis, which killed dozens of Tunisians and Palestinians in 1985.
