Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has welcomed the imposition of the second package of US sanctions against Iran, claiming they would “contribute to stability, security and peace”.

“Today is a historic day,” Netanyahu said yesterday, adding that “Iran is the biggest threat to Israel, the Middle East and the world”.

“For many years I dedicated my time and energy to fighting the Iranian threat. On this issue, I went against almost the entire world. Today we see the fruit of that long and continuous battle,” he said.

The United States yesterday launched a new batch of what it has described as the “toughest ever” sanctions on Iran that target the oil exports, shipping and banks. The sanctions target Iran as well as countries that trade with it.
