Iraq: 1,900 bodies recovered from under rubble in Mosul

Iraqi civil defence forces have recovered 1,900 bodies from the rubble in the northern city of Mosul.

Civil defence officer Fahd Al-Abed told the Anadolu Agency that most of the unidentified bodies belonged to Daesh militants.

“There are bodies of children and women believed to be family members of Daesh militants who were killed during the fighting that took place in the city last year,” Al-Abed said.

It was widely reported that the international coalition’s intensive bombing of the city in 2014 in an effort to recapture it from Daesh killed thousands of civilians and buried them under the rubble.

The Nineveh’s civil defence directorate began operations to recover the bodies of civilians and Daesh militants buried under the city’s rubble in May.
