Former head of the PLO’s Prisoners and Freed Prisoners’ Committee, Issa Qaraqe, has warned Palestinians sides of the dangers of dissolving the committee in light of the continuous Israeli aggression against the prisoners and their resistance, Shehab News Agency reported yesterday.

Qaraqe’s remarks came in the wake of the fears raised by the Palestinian prisoners and ex-prisoners about their future if the committee was dissolved.

“The committee is the official representative body for the prisoners and freed prisoners. It was established by a sovereign decision and is subject to laws and regulations approved by the [PLO, Fatah, Palestinian Authority] president and approved by the parliament,” Qaraqe said.

“No one has the right to gamble the fate of the prisoners, freed prisoners and their families,” he said, “everyone has to stand strong against all attempt to dissolve the committee.”

He called for action to stop the committee being used for personal gains and to support it and its programmes during this difficult period.

“The Prisoners Club is a registered NGO and it must be maintained and its role must be reinforced as it has been serving the issue of the Palestinian prisoners and defending their rights for a long time.”
