US President Donald Trump is expected to nominate State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert for the post of UN ambassador.

Officials said the announcement is expected today with trump opting for a relatively inexperienced newcomer in one of the most high-profile positions in US diplomacy.

Nauert is a former Fox News anchor and has been State Department spokesperson since April 2017.

If the Senate approve her nomination, she would take over the post of UN ambassador Nikki Haley who resigned in October and is due to step down at the end of the year.

Haley had been voted the most popular US politician and is a strong supporter of Israel and regularly slams the UN for its support for Palestinian rights. Withdrawing the US from the UN Human Rights Council in June she accused the body of “chronic bias against Israel”.
