Malaysia PM reiterates support for Palestine

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Bin Mohamad yesterday reiterated his country's support for the Palestinian people and their rights.

This came during a phone call with the head of the Hamas political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, a statement from the Palestinian official's office said.

According to the statement, Bin Mahathir considered Israel a "criminal state" saying that "Malaysia will continue to say the truth, and exhaust all efforts, until the Palestinian people regain their rights".

He stressed his country's keenness on bilateral relations with Hamas.

For his part, Haniyeh stressed the importance of bilateral relationship between Malaysia and Palestine in general and Hamas in particular, praising the historical Malaysian support for the Palestinian cause and the Gaza Strip.

He also praised Malaysia's firm stance on the issues of Jerusalem and the right of return.
