A senior US official has warned that Iran will probably attack Israel if it continues to strike Iranian military positions in Syria.

Director of National Intelligence, Dan Coats, told the US Senate Select Committee on Intelligence they “assess that Iran seeks to avoid a major armed conflict with Israel. However, Israeli strikes that result in Iranian casualties increase the likelihood of Iranian conventional retaliation against Israel.”

Israeli President, Reuven Rivlin warned during a conference held in Tel Aviv on Monday that Iran was likely to “intensify its responses” to Israeli strikes against its forces in Syria.

Israel has carried out dozens of strikes on Syria in recent years.

It says it is acting to thwart advanced weapons transfers from Iran to the Lebanese pro-Iranian Hezbollah movement and the strengthening of Iran’s military presence in Syria
