Sudanese authorities said yesterday that an attempt to hijack a Sudan Airways flight from Cairo to Khartoum was thwarted on Monday.

The official SUNA news agency reported that a passenger attempted to enter the cabin to hijack the plane.

According to the agency, the passenger was among a number of who had been deported from Egypt for violating immigration rules. No further details were given.

The agency added that the crew managed to control the situation and arrested the hijacker while the plane completed its journey and landed safely at Khartoum airport.

The hijacker was handed over to the competent authorities, it added.

Director of Khartoum International Airport, Isamuddin Ahmed Mohammed, said: “The security situation is stable and air traffic was not affected by the incident”.
