African Union calls for 'national dialogue to bring Algerian crisis to an end'

African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki called for a national dialogue in Algeria to end the “crisis” the country has been experiencing because of the popular protest against President Abdelaziz Bouteflika and his regime.

“The African Union is closely following up the current developments in Algeria,” Faki said in a press statement on Saturday, calling for “national dialogue to achieve the necessary consensus to accurately implement these reforms in an atmosphere of peace, stability, and sustainability of the state.”

Faki also praised the “peaceful nature of the marches, which demonstrate the great awareness and sense of responsibility of the Algerian people and all the concerned actors.”

The statement added: “The Commission Chairperson also praises the decisions that President Bouteflika announced taking on 11 March 2019 in his seven-point plan, especially his decision not to run for the presidency.”

On the other hand, the official expressed the African Union’s full solidarity with Algeria at this stage in its history, stressing that he is fully sure that the Algerian people will find all the necessary resources to overcome the current challenges and establish the desired national reform.
