Iraqi President Barham Salih will soon begin consultations to choose a new candidate to form the government following the resignation of Mohammed Allawi on Sunday, the country’s official news agency reported.

The Iraqi presidency’s media office said that Saleh has called on all political parties to strive to reach a national agreement on choosing an alternative prime minister who is accepted by the people and lawmakers, during the specified constitutional period, in order to form a government capable of handling its tasks in light of the tremendous challenges facing Iraq.

The Iraqi president stressed that the security, political and economic repercussions and health challenges facing Iraq, the region and the world necessitate resolving Iraq’s lack of government, in order to protect the security and safety of citizens and move forward towards achieving the national reform project.
