Tunisia: Ennahda says return to individual rule is unacceptable 

The Ennahda movement in Tunisia said on Monday that any “return to individual rule is unacceptable,” Anadolu has reported. The movement warned against any action that might divert the country from the gains of the revolution.

Ennahda is the largest parliamentary bloc in the Tunisian parliament, with 54 out of 217 seats. The statement was issued after a meeting of its Shura Council over the weekend.

“Any attempt to return to individual rule is rejected by the Tunisian people and will not be allowed,” said Ennahda. It added a warning against acts that involve a retraction of freedom and democracy as gained by the revolution.

The movement called on President Kais Saied to tackle the health sector and economic situation as the state’s priorities. It also demanded that he should “avoid any step that would divide Tunisians, and refrain from adopting individual interpretations of the constitution that would disrupt the interests of the state and society.”

The obstruction of the cabinet reshuffle by the head of state “greatly damaged” government performance, Ennahda pointed out, and disrupted the interests and work of state institutions.”

Appropriate steps, the movement insisted, should be taken by President Saied and Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi to end the cabinet reshuffle crisis.
