The Egyptian government has dismissed a social media post attributed to the Ministry of Health and which warns citizens against going to hospital if they develop symptoms of COVID-19.

The Cabinet Council’s media centre stressed that the ministry has not warned citizens against heading to hospitals if they fear they have coronavirus, nor has it announced that the ministry was sending health teams to examine symptomatic individuals in their homes.

The post “is a hoax and the ministry has no relation to it at all,” the Cabinet Council noted, adding that the ministry denied those rumours last year.

Egypt is currently experiencing a third wave of COVID-19 infections that doctors and independent observers say has taken its toll on hospitals and medical facilities, as well as doctors and health workers. According to the Worldometer, Egypt has so far recorded 231,803 cases of COVID-19 infections, including 13,591 fatalities.
