Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent a letter to the United Nations Security Council requesting support in holding legislative elections scheduled later this year.
“Iraq has sent a message to the Security Council asking for its support and to send observers to hold the elections on time,” the ministry said in a statement.
Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein received a phone call from the Foreign Minister of Belgium, Sophie Wilmès, the statement added. The officials discussed the need to strengthen bilateral relations and the Iraqi government’s decision to hold free and fair legislative elections.
Iraqi President Barham Salih has recently discussed with the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres the need for effective coordination between the two sides to secure international monitoring during the upcoming elections.
