Qatar orders arrest of finance minister on corruption charges

The Prosecutor’s Office in Qatar has announced that it has ordered the arrest of finance minister Ali Sharif Al-Emadi on corruption charges. The move was made public in a brief statement issued by the official Qatar News Agency (QNA).

“After reviewing the documents and the attached reports, the prosecutor ordered the arrest of finance minister Ali Sharif Al-Emadi and interrogated him on reported crimes linked to the public service, namely, wasting public funds, misusing authority at work and abusing power,” it was explained. “The public prosecutor has ordered the opening of thorough investigations into the alleged crimes in the submitted documents.”

Al-Emadi has served as Qatar’s finance minister since 2013. He was also appointed as chairman of the board of Qatar Airways, and Chairman of Qatar National Bank (QNB Group).
