Sudanese news outlets reported that the country’s Attorney-General, Tag El-Sir El-Hibir, submitted his resignation to the transitional Sovereignty Council against the backdrop of differences within the judicial institution.

Al Jareeda newspaper reported that El-Hibir submitted his resignation as differences surfaced after the Sudanese Committee on the Dismantling of June 30 Regime dismissed 56 judges and 26 prosecutors. June 30 is the date that ousted President Omar Al-Bashir led a bloodless coup in 1989.

The attorney general protested the decision on the grounds that it delays his work and hampers its independence, and that the decisions affected prosecutors who had been put in charge of committees that were investigating suspected corruption by other prosecutors.
