Footage showing a young Palestinian woman smiling resliantly after being beaten and handcuffed by Israeli soldiers has gone viral online.

Maryam Al-Afifi, who is a member of the Palestine Youth Orchestra, was arrested yesterday during a protest against the imminent forcible eviction of residents of the occupied East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah.

The video footage shows her being dragged by her red hijab by an Israeli soldier and then carried away.

While being held on the side of the road, Al-Afifi asked the Israeli soldier tasked with watching over her: “This is what you wanted to be when you were a child? To be on the side of oppressors?”

She has since been released.
