The head of Tunisia’s Ennahda movement and Speaker of Parliament has said that the bravery of the Palestinian resistance will establish another future for the Arab world. Rached Ghannouchi added that the Levant will be rearranged in a way that puts the Palestinian cause on the right path.

“The Palestinian resistance has proven that this nation has not perished, and that the Palestinian people have been sent to this holy land by The Almighty to be the guardians of the Noble Sanctuary of Al-Aqsa and the heritage of the prophets,” Ghannouchi told Al-Jazeera-Mubasher yesterday evening. “We are in the process of mapping out the new Middle East, because things were not going as they should.”

The veteran politician noted that there is international sympathy for the Palestinian cause amid an increasing conviction about Palestinian rights in Arab and other capitals. Without international support, he stressed, Israel will be unable to maintain its presence. “This entity is undoubtedly propped up [by America and the West], and if it is left to itself, it won’t stand up to the will of the Palestinian people. There is a growing conviction that the situation cannot continue and the balance of power will change if Israeli arrogance persists.”

Major events in history such as what is happening in the Palestinian territories must have repercussions, said Ghannouchi. “It is a remarkable clash between Israeli arrogance and Palestinian legitimacy paving the way for major changes in regional history and geography.” The so-called “deal of the century, he suggested, is the biggest casualty of this uprising. “We are witnessing the emergence of a new political reality.”

In closing, he urged the Arab states which have normalised relations with Israel to think again, and withdraw with dignity. “Normalisation will inevitably vanish. The blessed Palestinian uprising has exposed the Zionist myth that this was a ‘land without a people for a people without a land’.”

Many Tunisian civil society organisations, backed by political parties, called for a major demonstration in support of the Palestinians on Wednesday in the capital. Moreover, the parliament in Tunis called for Israeli officials to be referred to the International Criminal Court (ICC). MPs also appealed to the free people of the world to put pressure on the occupation state to lift the siege on the Gaza Strip.
