Syria welcomes any initiative that would restore relations with Arab states and all efforts made to achieve this, Minister for Foreign and Expatriates Affairs, Dr Faisal Mekdad, has said.

“We must stand by each other and achieve maximum levels of bilateral cooperation within the framework of developing relations between the Arab countries,” he added in a statement published by Al-Thawra newspaper yesterday.

There is a real will among the Arab populations across the Middle East, he explained, to rally around Syria in order to restore the minimum sense of Arab solidarity, which can only be successful with Syria’s return to the Arab League.

Syria was thrown out of the Arab League in 2011 over its violent response to peaceful protests calling for change, a move that failed to stem the bloodshed that spiralled into civil war.
