An American citizen has been found dead in a hotel in the Al-Haram area of Giza under mysterious circumstances, reports Newsweek.

According to local media the 60-year-old man was last seen going to his hotel room with his girlfriend.

Security forces have ordered an autopsy of his body, reports Sada Elarab, and are conducting an investigation.

However, the security forces in Egypt have in the past been heavily criticised for failing to conduct meaningful investigations, and for obscuring the findings.

There are conflicting reports around the circumstances of his death with Al-Masry Al-Youm reporting that the preliminary forensic report found that the cause of death was a heart attack.

Last year, US citizen Mustafa Kassem died in a prison cell in Egypt after being denied urgent medical attention.

Kassem was a taxi driver in New York and had diabetes and a heart ailment and died of heart failure after being denied adequate medical care.

In November last year five Americans, who were part of an international peacekeeping force, died after crashing in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.
