Egypt’s Defence Minister Mohammad Zaki and his Russian counterpart Sergey Shoigu have signed a military and security cooperation protocol, it was announced yesterday. The deal was signed in Moscow where Zaki attended the seventh meeting of the Joint Military Committee.

The two officials discussed the latest developments in the regional and international arenas. They also addressed several issues of common importance related to military cooperation and the exchange of technical expertise.

Shoigu pointed out his country’s desire to reinforce cooperation with Egypt as it is a pivotal country and an important strategic ally in the Middle East.

Egypt and Russia have developed their relationship since Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi led a coup against President Mohamed Morsi in 2013. This has mainly had an impact in relation to the situation in Syria. In the process, Moscow has become an important arms supplier for Egypt, alongside the United States and France.
