The head of the Heart of Tunisia party, Nabil Karoui, and his brother, MP Ghazi Karoui, will appear before the public prosecutor in the Algerian city of Tebessa, the head of the Algerian League for the Defence of Human Rights (LADDH), Salah Dabouz, announced yesterday.

Dabouz added that the association would be present with the aim of “protecting the rights of the detainees,” stressing that the LADDH’s role was primarily “to ensure a fair trial for them.”

“Nabil and Ghazi’s lawyers will be attending the hearing,” Dabouz pointed out, noting that the defendants were seeking “political asylum in Algeria.”

In a similar context, a source from the Heart of Tunisia told Tunisia Gate that the Karoui brothers would “request political asylum from the Algerian authorities.”

Since 2017, the Karoui brothers have been investigated in money laundering and tax evasion cases. Former presidential candidate Nabil was arrested for interrogation before he was temporarily released in mid-June.

Tunisia and Algeria have an extradition treaty, which states either party “shall hand over every person present in the soil of one of the two countries and who is subject to prosecution or sentenced by the judicial authorities of the other.”
