The International Union of Muslim Scholars sent a congratulatory message to Mullah Muhammad Hassan Akhund on Sunday, following his appointment by the Taliban as the new Prime Minister of Afghanistan.

“On behalf of its presidency, board of trustees, general secretariat, and members,” said the Doha-based organisation, “the union expresses its sincere congratulations for the confidence that Mullah Akhund has been given by the movement and other Afghan parties assigning him to head the new government.”

The scholars’ union said that this confidence reflects the expertise and prestige of the new prime minister. It added its hopes that the Taliban government will succeed in leading the Afghan people in their aspirations for security, stability, unity, and prosperity.

All sections of the Afghan people and their leaders, said the union, should support, cooperate with and advise the new government. The approach of dialogue and peaceful understanding should be adopted to overcome the various problems facing the country as a result of foreign invasion and internal conflict.

In closing, the union affirmed its keenness to cooperate fully with the Taliban government.
