The former head of the Hamas political bureau, Khaled Meshaal, has described the escape of six Palestinian prisoners from a high-security Israeli jail as “epic”, Quds Press has reported. Meshaal made his comment during a telephone call with the families of the escapees.

“We hail the heroism of the prisoners who made history by their determination to free themselves and from the Israeli prison,” he said. “The epic escape from the high-security Israeli prison was a slap in the face of the Israeli security services. It is a living example for the Palestinians who are seeking freedom and trying to extract their legitimate rights from the occupation.”

Moreover, the former Hamas official stressed that the escape triggered the spirit of resistance in the souls of the Palestinians. “This was clear in the level of solidarity and support for the prisoners.”

He concluded his call to the families by saying that, “God Willing”, the prisoners will be freed “very soon” in an “honourable” prisoner swap. “The Palestinian resistance will continue serving prisoners, their issues, and their families.”

According to Quds Press, the families expressed their “confidence” in Hamas and the Palestinian resistance, which has been working towards a prisoner swap agreement to free Palestinians from Israeli jails.

On Saturday, Israeli occupation forces recaptured the final two Palestinian prisoners of the six who escaped from the high-security Gilboa Prison on 6 September.
