Iran’s navy forces today thwarted an attempted “pirate attack” on an Iranian oil tanker sailing towards the Gulf of Aden, south of Yemen, local media reported.

“The escort team of the Iranian Army’s Navy stationed on the oil tanker clashed with pirates on the vessel’s way to the Gulf of Aden, before entering the Bab El-Mandeb Strait,” the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

Meanwhile, the Tasnim news agency said four boats, each carrying six armed pirates were heading to hijack the tanker, which was heading for the Bab El Mandeb Strait, but they were warded off by an Iranian Navy squad aboard the vessel.
