A Palestinian prisoner was released from Israeli jails yesterday after serving a 20-year term, the Safa news agency reported.

Mohammad Jaber Abdu, who is affiliated with the Al-Qassam Brigades, was arrested by occupation forces in 2001 and later sentenced to 20 years in prison.

During his detention, Abdu spent six consecutive years in isolation.

Hamas called on Palestinians to take to the streets in his home town of Kafr Ni’ma, near Tulkarm, to celebrate his release.

Sources from the area reported to Safa news agency that the Israeli occupation forces fired tear gas at Palestinians in order to disperse them. Israel regularly releases prisoners in the dead of the night or on the condition that no celebrations are held to mark their release.
