An editorial in the Algerian Army magazine, the mouthpiece of the military establishment, accused Morocco on Tuesday of escalating hostilities towards its North African neighbour by allying with Israel. Military and security cooperation with the occupation state, it said, also proves Rabat’s insistence on betraying and conspiring against the Palestinian cause.

“The Moroccan elite are doing this with the aim of liquidating the Palestinian cause in the service of Zionism. The evil neighbour not only sold the [Palestinian] cause, but its treason has also reached the point of allowing the Zionist entity to establish a foothold in the region, which until recently remained taboo,” the magazine added. “They are trying to appear before the international community as a peaceful state that is not hostile to the Zionist entity, despite its violation of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.”

The article claimed that by improving its relations with Israel, Morocco aims to make the international community turn a blind eye to its occupation of the Western Sahara, the displacement of its people, and the plundering of its resources. Algeria backs the Polisario Front, which is seeking an independent state in Western Sahara.
