The Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has expressed the organisation’s solidarity with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in all measures that preserve its security and stability and combat terrorism.

In a statement issued on Monday, Nayef Al-Hajraf stressed “the firm position of the GCC member states in condemning all forms of violence, extremism and terrorism, whatever its motives and causes.” He expressed GCC support for the measures taken by Jordan to ensure the safety of all of its citizens and residents.

Al-Hajraf also praised Jordan’s vigilance and called for the strengthening of international cooperation in the face of terrorism in order to dry up its financial, intellectual and organisational sources.

In the same context, Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also expressed its “full solidarity” with Jordan in its “war against terrorism” in order to “eliminate extremist ideology”.

The expressions of solidarity came after the Jordanian security authorities announced yesterday the killing of three security personnel and wounding of five others during a raid on the hideout of militants suspected of gunning down Colonel Abdel Razzaq Abdel-Hafez Al-Dalabeh, the Deputy Police Director of Maan Governorate last Friday. The main suspect was killed in the raid, and eight alleged accomplices were arrested, said Jordan’s Public Security Directorate.

During the past week, Jordan has witnessed riots and protests against rising fuel prices. It was during one of these protests that Colonel Abdel-Hafez was shot and killed.
