The guards of the archaeological area of the ancient quarries in Egypt’s Aswan province successfully stopped suspects who were digging next to the statue of the ancient Egyptian king Ramses II, in an allegedly attempt to steal it.
Dr Abdel Moneim Saeed, director general of Aswan Antiquities, said that he was informed by the guards of the archaeological area in the old quarries, located in the south of the Upper Egyptian city of Aswan, that while they were patrolling the area, they found some people digging next to the statue of Ramses II.
The accused have been arrested and the Tourism and Antiquities Police were notified. Public prosecutors were also notified.
