Eid Traditions: Omanis cook spiced meat parcels in huge underground oven

An ancient Eid tradition has been kept alive in Oman. Families in Nizwa throw bags of spiced meat known as shuwa into a communal underground oven, usually on the first day of Eid, to be slow cooked over several days and enjoyed on the 2nd, 3rd or even 4th day of Eid. Each family has to be sure to fasten an identifying tile or marker to the bag, or risk losing their Eid delicacy! Shuwa cooking is a community celebration and is normally accompanied by traditional songs and dance.
