Faiq Zidan, the head of the Supreme Judicial Council in Iraq, emphasised the importance of respecting and implementing agreements and treaties between Baghdad and Kuwait.

During a meeting with Kuwaiti Ambassador Tareq Al-Faraj in Baghdad yesterday,

Zidan highlighted Iraq’s respect for the State of Kuwait, historically, presently and in the future. The independence of Kuwait throughout different historical stages, as well as the deep relationship between the two brotherly peoples, and Iraq’s appreciation for Kuwait’s honourable positions in assisting Iraq in getting rid of the dictatorial regime.

He emphasised the “importance of respecting and implementing the agreements and treaties concluded between Iraq and Kuwait in accordance with constitutional and legal contexts, and respecting the implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions.”

On 4 September, the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court ruled on an agreement regulating navigation in the Khor Abdullah waterway between the two states as unconstitutional. The court said the law that ratified the accord should have been approved by two thirds of parliament.

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and the US today called for the completion of demarcation of Kuwaiti-Iraqi maritime borders.
