The spokesperson for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Majed Al-Ansari, confirmed yesterday that Doha’s efforts to de-escalate the situation in Gaza are ongoing and have been a consistent element of the Gulf state’s foreign policy.
He pointed out that Qatar’s role has been within the framework of mediation between the two parties and reaching a consensus to end the state of escalation to alleviate the suffering in Gaza and the Palestinian territories.
Last week, Qatar successfully mediated an agreement between Israel and officials in the Gaza Strip to reopen crossing points to the besieged territory after Palestinians were prevented from leaving the enclave for work.
Israel closed the crossing on 15 September for the Jewish New Year holiday, citing security concerns. The closures are standard practice during the Jewish national holiday of Purim, with the military claiming this is a preventative measure.
