Denmark must condemn Israeli war crimes in Gaza, increase Danish aid to Palestine and work for a political solution to the conflict, a petition with over 50,000 signatories has said.

Mirroring the situation in Gaza with that in Ukraine, the letter said: “The government has made it clear that violations of the laws of war in Ukraine and in the rest of the world must not be tolerated, and that wars must be fought within the framework of international law, taking into account proportions in the use of force against military targets.” The government, it added, must work towards “an immediate ceasefire and the opening of humanitarian corridors” in Gaza.

It also calls for condemning “Israel’s violations of International Law and work actively to support international investigations” into possible violations of international law, including the use of collective punishment; blocking humanitarian access; forced displacement; the bombing of civilian facilities, including schools, hospitals and health clinics; the use of white phosphorus in built up areas and bombing citizens has the fled for safety.

Though the petition has garnered much support, it will not automatically be discussed in parliament until a member of the Folketing tables a motion for the discussion of a resolution on this topic.
