The head of the Hamas political bureau said on Tuesday that the Islamic Resistance Movement is keen on reaching a ceasefire agreement in Gaza based on achieving the demands of the Palestinian people. Ismail Haniyeh made his comment during a phone call with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Amir Khan Muttaqi, during which they discussed political and other developments in Gaza.
Haniyeh stressed the need to support the steadfastness of the Palestinian people in order to achieve their goals and aspirations for freedom, obtaining their legitimate rights, and the liberation of Al-Aqsa Mosque.
The Afghan foreign minister affirmed the positions of the Afghan government and its people in support of the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian resistance, in particular in Operation Al-Aqsa Flood last October. Muttaqi stressed his confidence in the eventual victory of the Palestinian people and their resistance.
Ever since the cross-border incursion led by Hamas fighters on 7 October, Israel has been waging a devastating war against the Palestinians in Gaza. The Israeli offensive has killed almost 40,000 Palestinians and wounded more than 90,000 others, mainly children and women. At least 90 per cent of the population in Gaza has been displaced, the UN has confirmed.
